FIELD: engines.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines. Method for engine (10) is as follows. Method comprises operating first group of combusting cylinders (30) on first engine (10) bank (14A) to provide a net flow of air and exhaust gas in a first direction while adjusting a valve timing of a second group of non-combusting cylinders (30) on a second engine bank (14B) to have substantially less flow in second bank (14B) as compared to first bank (14A). Direction of substantially less flow in second bank (14B) is adjusted based on an exhaust air-to-fuel ratio of the second bank (14B), including implementation of reverse flow. Method includes indicating Flange leakage of exhaust gases on basis of fuel-air ratio of exhaust gases in second bank (14B), which is poorer than fuel-air ratio in first engine (10) bank (14A) during reverse flow through second bank (14B). Invention discloses versions of described method for engine.
EFFECT: technical result consists in reduction of air flow through operation of cylinders.
