SUBSTANCE: invention relates to continuous casting combined with rolling. Metal strip is produced by casting a slab in casting machine (2), feeding in direction (F) for feeding the strip to finishing mill (3) and finishing rolling. In the event of a production fault and a complete or almost complete standstill of the slab or the strip, a cut in the slab or strip is created by cutting a part of the slab or strip, by: a) cutting slab or strip (1) at first location (4); b) cutting through strip (1) at second location (5) at a distance of 0.1 m and 5.0 m from the first location in conveying direction (F), to form a cut in the slab or strip; c) removing the cut-out portion of slab or strip from the conveying line to create gap (6) in slab or strip (1); d) conveying further slab or strip material from the region upstream of the first location in conveying direction (F) into the region of gap (6) created in steps a), b); e) cutting off portions of slab or strip conveyed according to step d) and removing the portions from the conveying line.
EFFECT: quick removal of the slab or workpiece from installation is ensured, preventing damage to the crystalliser.
