FIELD: turning; drilling.
SUBSTANCE: cutting insert (100) including top surface (102), lower surface (103), back surface (105) connecting the upper surface and the lower surface, and upper cutting edge (106). Upper cutting edge forms leading edge surface (112) and minor edge surface (113) connected by edge surface (114) at the apex. On the upper surface, chip former (115) is formed, comprising bottom surface (116) at the apex formed behind the edge surface at the apex, main major lower surface (117) extending along the leading edge surface, and between the lower surface at the apex and the main major lower surface, continuous main protruding lower surface (118) extending along the leading edge portion and having a lower point lower than the level of the main edge surface, but higher than the lowest point of each of the lower surface at the vertex and the main major lower surface.
EFFECT: reliable chip control is achieved at different depths of cutting and feeds.
