SUBSTANCE: method of forming surface (53) on metal workpiece (50) includes a first processing step, on which providing turning plate (1) comprising a first cutting edge (11), second cutting edge (12) and convex cutting edge (10) at top connecting first (11) and second (12) cutting edges. Then, an apex angle is selected between first (11) and second (12) cutting edges, less than or equal to 85°. Method includes additional stages, at which second cutting edge (12) is adapted so that it forms auxiliary angle in plan making more than 90° in feed direction (99). All parts of plate (1) are positioned for turning ahead of cutting edge (10) at vertex in feed direction (99), rotating metal workpiece (50) about axis (A3) of rotation in first direction and moving plate (1) for turning in direction parallel or at an angle of less than 45° relative to rotation axis (A3) so that first cutting edge (11) is working and is located in front of cutting edge (10) at apex in feed direction (99), and so that surface (53) is at least partially formed by cutting edge (10) at apex.
EFFECT: disclosed is a method of processing a metal billet by turning.
