FIELD: wireless communication equipment.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to wireless communication. Methods and devices for activating and deactivating muting patterns in the nodes of a radio access network RAN in order to enable better detection and use of reference symbols that are used for synchronization over the air. Exemplary method in a base station operating in a wireless communication network includes determining, that the first neighboring cell from a plurality of neighboring cells interferes or is likely to interfere with a signal from a second neighboring cell that is used for synchronization. Method further includes transmitting, to the first neighbor cell, an activation request for a muting pattern of the reference signal by the first neighboring cell, request includes information identifying the second neighbor cell or layer of the second neighboring cell.
EFFECT: providing the possibility of better detection and use of reference symbols, which are used for synchronization over the air.
