FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of a liquid polysulphide, comprising mercapto terminal groups. Method comprises steps of: a) reacting (para)formaldehyde with a haloalcohol to form a reaction mixture containing bis(2-dihaloalkyl) formal, and b) reacting the reaction mixture from step a) with either (i) sodium polysulphide, or (ii) a combination of sodium and hydrosulphide and sulphur.
EFFECT: process is carried out in the presence of a branching agent selected from dialdehydes and their corresponding acetals and hemiacetals.
