FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to polyesters which can be used as a component of lubricating oil compositions. Described is a polyester obtained by reacting a mixture comprising: a) adipic acid, b) 2-propyl-1-heptanol; and c) at least one polyol with a hydroxyl functionality ranging from ≥2 to ≤6, which is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, bisphenol A, trimethylolpropane, glycerol, castor oil, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, dipentaerythritol and sucrose. Also described is a method of producing said polyester, comprising steps of: i) reacting a mixture comprising component a), component b) and component c) in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of titanium-containing compounds, zirconium-containing compounds and tin-containing compounds, ii) heating the mixture obtained in step i) to a temperature in the range of 80 °C to 160 °C at the first stage and then to a temperature in the range of 190 °C to 240 °C at the second stage, iii) vacuum treatment of the reaction mixture obtained in step ii), iv) cooling the reaction mixture obtained in step iii) to a temperature in the range of 20 °C to 90 °C and adding water to the reaction mixture and v) drying and purifying the reaction mixture obtained in step iv). Also described is a lubricating oil composition comprising: a) from ≥1% to ≤99.9 wt% of said at least one polyester, b) from ≥0% to ≤99 wt% of at least one base component selected from the group consisting of mineral oils (group I, II or III oils), poly-alpha-olefins (group IV oils), polymerised and copolymerised olefins, alkyl naphthalenes, alkylene oxide polymers, silicone oils, phosphate esters and carboxylic acid esters (group V oils), and c) from ≥0.1 to ≤25 wt% of one or more performance additives, wherein the content in wt% of components a), b) and c) in each case are given in terms of the total weight of the lubricating oil composition and the sum of the weights of all components a), b) and c) is 100 %. Method for reducing the friction coefficient of a lubricating oil composition when lubricating a mechanical device is described, comprising the preparation of said lubricating oil composition together with at least one of said polyester.
EFFECT: technical result is the preparation of a polyester having improved characteristics at low temperature, high hydrolytic stability, and improved thermal stability.
