SUBSTANCE: invention relates to food and pharmaceutical industry. Disclosed sweetening composition is characterised by a crystalline powdered sorbitol content of 80 to 95 % by weight in dry state, enthalpy of not more than 150 J/g, an average volume diameter of 200 to 350 mcm. Specific surface area of the particles of the composition, determined according to the BET method, is less than 0.6 m2/g, preferably from 0.15 to 0.4 m2/g and even more preferably from 0.20 to 0.35 m2/g. Also, embodiments of this composition in the manufacture of chewing gum and tablets for the pharmaceutical industry and a chewing gum composition are provided. Invention makes it possible to obtain a sorbitol composition with a low tendency to clumping, good hygroscopicity and optimum compressibility when moulding tablets in order to protect the equipment against wear.

EFFECT: chewing gum obtained using the disclosed sweetening composition is characterised by improved softness, and it was also possible to reduce the consumption of gum base and flavouring substances due to more efficient release from the sweetener.
