SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for controlling the delivery of a continuous elongated element in a process and in an apparatus for building tyres for vehicle wheels. Continuous elongated element (11) is guided in dynamic storage device (10) along a zigzag path defined by a plurality of idle rollers (19, 21), on which continuous elongated element (11) is partially wound, and is advanced in feed direction (F1-F8) along the abovementioned path. Method provides for applying torque on at least one drive element (29, 31) placed along the abovementioned zigzag path, in a manner such that continuous elongated element (11) is conducted in feed direction (F1-F8) and that the longitudinal tension in continuous elongated element (11) itself downstream of drive element (29, 31) is reduced with respect to the longitudinal tension upstream of same drive element (29, 31).

EFFECT: invention increases the speed of movement in the temporary storage device and its throughput without creating excessive residual deformations.
