FIELD: cattle breeding.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the biology of animal husbandry and can be used in trotting horse breeding. Method of evaluation of the speed characteristics of horses of trotting breeds by the elemental composition of the hair includes sampling of biological material, the calculation of the coefficient, which allows to evaluate the speed characteristics of the animal. At the same time, the horse's mane hair is used as a biological material, and as a coefficient that allows to evaluate the speed characteristics of the animal, the toxic load coefficient (K) is used, which is calculated by the formula: K=Al/Ca×100, where: K is a toxic load coefficient, %; Al is the concentration of aluminum microelement in the hair, mcg/g; Ca is the concentration of calcium macroelement in the hair, mcg/g; 100 is a adjusting factor. If K values are in the range of 4.5–10.4 %, the horse’s speed characteristics are estimated as high, with a coefficient in the range of 10.5–18.2 % as average, with a coefficient in the range of 18.3–31.0 % — as low.

EFFECT: proposed method makes it possible to reliably attribute an animal to one group or another in terms of speed characteristics while minimizing adverse stress effects on an animal body when taking a biological sample; in addition, there is no need for multiple selection of material for research due to the significant stability of the elemental composition of hair.
