FIELD: biotechnology.

SUBSTANCE: invention represents a method for selecting stallions of Arabian thorough-bred breed with high sperm cell survival before and after cryoconservation by elemental composition of hair comprises cutting a required hair sample by weight of at least 0.24 g from a mane area in the projection of the first cervical vertebra, selection of a proximal portion of hair of equal length 3.3 cm. Method is characterized by that sperm cell survival rate is used as a criterion for estimating sperm cell survival in fresh and post-thawing (cryoconservation) at T 2–4 °C, which is calculated by formula SSI=Zn/Hg/1000, where SSI – sperm cell survival index, %; Zn – amount of zinc in mane hair, mmole/kg; Hg – amount of mercury in mane hair, mmole/kg; 1000 – correction factor. If SSI is less than 115.0 %, stallions are referred to a group of animals with low sperm cell survival in fresh and unfrozen semen, if SSI is more than 115.1 %, stallions are referred to a group with high sperm cell survival rate.

EFFECT: invention can be used for selection of stallions of Arabian thorough-bred breed with high survival rate of spermatozoa in fresh and thawed (after cryoconservation) sperm.
