SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medical equipment. Method of monitoring heart rate of a user is carried out using heart rate monitor device (100). Device comprises primary sensor (110) for measuring a heart rate of a user, secondary sensor (120) for measuring one physiological factor, power control unit (160) for controlling the operation of primary sensor (110) based on information (126) received from secondary sensor (120), model unit (133) for estimating the heart rate of the user based on the model stored in model unit (133), and information (126) received from secondary sensor (120). Primary sensor (110) has a first power consumption level. Secondary sensor (120) has a second power consumption level that is lower than the first power consumption level. Model unit (133) is connected to power control unit (160) using a feedback loop. Power control unit (160) is adapted to reduce the sampling rate and / or measurement intensity of primary sensor (110) if the heart rate estimate and the measured heart rate match each other. Method of monitoring heart rate includes measuring the user's heart rate by primary sensor (110), measuring the physiological factor using secondary sensor (120), controlling the operation and / or power consumption of the primary sensor based on information from the secondary sensor, estimating the heart rate of the user based on the model stored in model unit (133) and information (126) obtained from secondary sensor (120), comparing the heart rate estimate with the measured heart rate and reducing the sampling rate and / or measurement intensity of primary sensor (110) if the estimate of the heart rate and the measured heart rate match each other.
