FIELD: electrical communication engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method in a wireless communication device for performing random access to a network node. This method comprises the steps of: receiving a set of downlink beam-specific reference signals (BRS) from the network node; determining a preferred BRS based on the received signal power for each BRS and selecting, based on the preferred BRS, a random-access resource to be used for transmitting a random-access attempt to the network node according to one or more predetermined association rules defining the connection between the random-access resource and the BRS; and also using the selected random-access resource when transmitting random-access attempts to the network node, whereby the selection of the random-access resource indicates to the network node, which downlink beam the wireless communication device prefers to use for downlink transmissions, moreover, the selection comprises a step of selecting from the plurality of preambles a preamble to be used for transmitting a random-access attempt.
EFFECT: technical result is to ensure the selection of a downlink beam for downlink transmissions.
