FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemical industry and nanotechnology and can be used in making power materials, sensors, biosensors and paper. Structures of nano-graphite oxide graphene and/or graphite oxide with thickness of less than 100 nm are obtained in an electrochemical cell containing a positive graphite electrode, a negative electrode which can also be graphite, as well as an electrolyte containing an aqueous solution of polyatomic organic anions and metal countercations or organic counter-cations, wherein concentration of hydrogen ions in electrolyte is less than 1 × 10-1 mol dm-3 (mol/l). Current is passed through cell for time less than 10 hours for intercalation of anions into graphite positive electrode and exfoliation. Polyatomic organic anions can be carboxylate anions, for example, C1-10alkanoates, as well as citrate or acetate, and are present in the electrolyte in concentration of 0.1 to 2 M. Positive electrode is connected to a binding component, for example a porous filter containing cellulose dialysis membranes, polycarbonate membranes or gauze. At least half of surface of positive electrode in contact with electrolyte comes into direct contact with binding component during electrochemical process. Oxygen content in the obtained graphene oxide is at least 10 wt. %.
