FIELD: electrolytic methods; electrophoresis; devices therefor.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for production in an electrochemical cell of one or more structures selected from graphene, graphite nanoplatelet structures with a thickness of less than 100 nm and graphane. Said cell comprises: (a) a negative electrode made of graphite; (b) a positive electrode, which may be made of graphite or other material; and (c) an electrolyte selected from (i) an ionic liquid; (ii) a deep eutectic solvent, which is a mixture of components with a melting point which is at least 10°C or more degrees below the melting point of one or all of the constituent mixture components; and (iii) a solid ionic conductor, optionally further comprising (iv) one or more ionic particles, the amount of (i), (ii) or (iii) and (iv) being greater than 90 wt%, based on the total weight of the electrolyte. Electrolyte contains a mixture of different cations. Said method includes a step of passing a current through said cell to intercalate ions into the graphite negative electrode so as to exfoliate said graphite negative electrode.
EFFECT: method is scalable at an industrial site.
