FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of determining level (17) of filling in liquid container (4) having ultrasonic sensor (3) of a filling level and at least two reference surfaces (1, 2) for reflecting an ultrasonic wave which is emitted by ultrasonic sensor (3) filling level, wherein first reference surface (1) is located under second reference surface (2). At step a) of the method, first speed (9) of the ultrasonic wave propagation in the liquid at the first measuring section (5) from the ultrasonic sensor of the filling level to the first reference surface (1) is determined. At step b) of the method, second speed (10) of the ultrasonic wave propagation in the liquid at the second measuring section (6) from the first reference surface (1) to the second reference surface (2) is determined. At step c) time (8) of ultrasonic wave passage from ultrasonic sensor (3) of filling level is measured to level of free surface (7) of liquid in reservoir (4). At step d) the first propagation speed (9) or the second propagation speed (10) is selected depending on at least one selection criterion (11, 12, 13). Then at step e) level (17) of filling is calculated by means of speed (9, 10) of propagation measured at step c) of time (8) and selected at step d).

EFFECT: disclosed is a method of determining level of filling in a tank.
