SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods and systems for monitoring operation of cylinder valves in an engine with disengaged cylinders (EDC). Result is achieved by the fact that in response to the engine cylinder valve drive diagnosis request in the non-fuelled engine state, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve opening command is issued and the first exhaust gas flow rate is determined, and one or more cylinder valves are disconnected and indicate deterioration of cylinder valve drive characteristics if the second flow rate of exhaust gases is not lower than the threshold value set relative to the first flow rate of the exhaust gas flow.

EFFECT: technical result is possibility of evaluation of potential deterioration of characteristics of mechanisms of engine cylinder disengagement system (CDS) by means of available exhaust gas recirculation system, without additional diagnostic equipment.
