FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for parametric encoding and decoding of multichannel audio signal. Obtaining a two-channel downmix signal and upmix parameters for parametric reconstruction of an M-channel audio signal having a given channel configuration, based on a downmix signal, where M ≥ 4. Indication is received indicating a selected format from at least two formats of encoding an M-channel audio signal having a given channel configuration. Said selected encoding format is switched between at least two encoding formats. Encoding formats correspond to corresponding different channel differentiations of the preset channel configuration of the M-channel audio signal into the corresponding first and second groups from one or more channels. At that, in the specified encoding format, the first channel of the downmix signal corresponds to the linear combination of the first group of one or more channels of the preset channel configuration of the M-channel audio signal.

EFFECT: technical result is to increase the coding efficiency of the multi-channel audio signal.
