SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to ophthalmology, and can be used for selecting a surgical method of closing iris defects of various lengths. Method of determining the area of the iris defect is that the patient is photographed by the eye, then on the obtained photograph of the iris, a grid mesh is placed in the PowerPoint program, consisting of 11 concentric circles, which break palette into 10 rings of equal size, with diameters, calculated by formula d2i+1=d2i+0.1(d2p-d2s), i=1,…,11, where dp is iris diameter, mm; ds is pupil diameter, mm; di is diameter of concentric circle, di=ds, with i=1, besides, the pallet is divided into angular sectors by 36°, size of the palette is brought into compliance with the size of the iris with the help of a computer mouse, the researcher manually calculates how much of 100 cells of the palette corresponding to 100 % of the iris occupy the defect.

EFFECT: use of the invention enables reducing the risk of possible intra- and postoperative complications that may occur if the iris defect area estimation is incorrect and the inadequate technique of its closure is selected.
