SUBSTANCE: invention relates to medicine and concerns a method for diagnosing or monitoring renal function in an individual, comprising determining the level of proenkephalin or fragments thereof in body water taken from said individual, performed more than once in one individual, and establishing a correlation of the level of subsequent measurement of proenkephalin or fragments thereof with renal function in an individual, where the relative reduction of said level during the subsequent measurement is prognostic to improve the renal function in the individual or where the relative increase of said level during the subsequent measurement is prognostic for impaired renal function in an individual, and wherein said body water is selected from a group comprising blood, serum, plasma, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and saliva.
EFFECT: invention provides diagnosing or monitoring renal function in an individual.
