FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to ophthalmology, and aims at protecting the cornea, reducing corneal epithelial damage or recovering from corneal disturbance. An ophthalmic aqueous composition contains (A) methyl cellulose with a viscosity index equal to 4, and methyl cellulose with a viscosity index equal to 15, in such an amount that the weight ratio ranges from 1:4 to 4:1, and the total concentration is 0.2–5 wt/vol%; (B) polyethylene glycol, having weight-average molecular weight of 4,000 or 8,000, in amount of 0.5–4.0 wt/vol%; (C) polyvinylpyrrolidone K25 in amount of 0.5–4.0 wt/vol%, and (D) citric acid or its sodium salts in amount of 1.0 to 4.0 wt/vol%. Said composition has a gel-forming property.
EFFECT: use of the invention enables higher effectiveness of corneal protection, eliminated reduction of the amount of tears, reduced epithelial dysfunction of the cornea, and provides recovery of the cornea after disturbed epithelium.
