FIELD: optics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optical investigation of precious stones. Apparatus for producing an indicator of whether a diamond is natural, realizes a method in which diamond is tested for the presence or absence of luminescent properties of one or more specific markers characterized by luminescence decay time and luminescence wavelength. Method includes the following operations: irradiating diamond with at least one exciting pulse of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation; during the supply and/or after the exciting pulse termination, the light emitted by the diamond is detected in at least one time window having a time offset relative to the exciting pulse to obtain luminescence data. Duration of a single or each time window is selected based on the condition of its luminescence matching, having attenuation time, which is characteristic for one or more markers, and the received luminescence data are analysed to determine presence or absence of one or more markers.

EFFECT: technical result consists in obtaining in a reasonable time more complete and reliable information on spectral and spatial characteristics of diamond to assess whether the analysed diamond is natural or synthetic (artificial).
