SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medical equipment, specifically to surgical stapling and cutting tools and staples intended for use with them. Surgical stapling instrument comprises an elongated shaft assembly, a surgical end effector and a hinge joint system. Articulation system comprises a first distal articulation drive member, a second distal articulation drive member, at least one gear wheel in a geographic engagement with a first distal articulation drive element and a second distal articulated drive element, means for selective blocking of the surgical end effector in pivotally turned positions relative to the elongated shaft assembly and a proximal drive element of the hinged joint. In the second embodiment, the surgical stapling instrument comprises an elongated shaft assembly, a surgical end effector and a hinge joint system. Articulation system comprises a first distal articulation drive member, a second distal articulation drive member, means for selective blocking of the surgical end effector in pivotally turned positions relative to the elongated shaft assembly and a proximal drive element of the hinged joint. In the third embodiment, the surgical stapling instrument comprises an elongated shaft assembly, a surgical end effector and a hinge joint system. Articulation system comprises a first distal hinged joint drive element, a second distal articulation drive member, a drive configured to interact with a first distal articulation drive member and a second distal articulation drive, a means for selectively locking the surgical end effector in hingedly turned positions relative to the elongated shaft assembly and a proximal articulation drive member configured to interact with a proximal and distal movement source of the articulation.

EFFECT: use of inventions allows providing a larger range of hinged rotation for a surgical end effector, reduced degree of slippage of the end effector or its undesired or unintentional movement during application.
