FIELD: engines and pumps.
SUBSTANCE: disclosed is a method in which electric machine 18 is used to apply a load to engine 10 of motor vehicle 5 after cold start in order to increase intensity with which engine 10 is heated. By increasing engine 10 heating intensity, the period of time after starting the engine, during which exhaust gas recirculation can not be used is reduced, thereby providing earlier use of exhaust gas recirculation to reduce NOx emissions from engine 10.
EFFECT: disclosed is a method for reducing engine NOx emissions.
