FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to sensor devices which use electroactive materials and methods of reading using said devices. Sensor device comprises a passive matrix array of electroactive sensor elements arranged in rows and columns. In one example, each sensor element generates a binary sensor signal such that a common signal in each row and in each column enables to determine any combination of external inputs. This provides a first method of determining a combination of sensor elements which read an input using a passive matrix addressing scheme. In another example, each sensor element generates a sensor signal with a different frequency characteristic. This provides another method of determining any combination of external inputs.
EFFECT: providing a passive sensor array of a sensor device for identifying unique combinations of active elements.
