SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a process for the production of glycols, involving the following steps: step (a), in which a starch-containing feedstock is obtained; step (b), wherein said feedstock undergoes a hydrolysis reaction in the presence of water to obtain a liquid hydrolysis product containing water and glucose, as well as dimers, trimers and oligomers thereof; step (c), in which said liquid hydrolysis product is subjected to a series of purification steps, including one or more filtration steps and one or more adsorption steps, until the stream of pretreated material has a sulfur content of less than 5 wt % ppm; and step (d), in which stream of pre-treated feedstock is in contact with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst composition containing at least two active catalyst components, said active catalyst components containing, as the first active catalyst component, one or more substances selected from transition metals 8, 9 or 10 group or compounds thereof, with possibility of catalytic hydrogenation; and, as a second active catalyst component, one or more substances selected from tungsten, molybdenum, lanthanum, tin, or compounds thereof, or complexes thereof.
EFFECT: proposed process allows to reduce deactivation of catalyst.
