FIELD: manufacturing technology; production of composite materials.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of making airgel and composite material of airgel and mineral fibers obtained using said method. Disclosed is method of making airgel with following technological stages: a) obtaining a silicate sol by hydrolysis of alkoxysilanes or hydroxyalkoxysilanes in an alcohol or an alcohol-containing mixture of solvents, b) preparing and aging the gel, c) hydrophobisation of the gel with a silylation agent in the presence of an acid as a catalyst and d) drying the gel by subcritical drying, in which the hydrophobisator is hexamethyldisiloxane, and nitric acid (HNO3) as acid. Airgel for making insulating materials and insulating composite material of airgel and mineral fibers are also described.

EFFECT: higher porosity and stability of airgel.
