FIELD: chemical industry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to methods and a system for producing hydroxymethylfurfural from cellulose. Disclosed method comprises: separating a stream of cellulose pulp hydrolyzate containing 80 % (weight / dry substance) of cellulose with ash content less than 6 %, using a chromatographic separation apparatus to thereby obtain a first stream comprising water and hydroxymethylfurfural; a second stream comprising water and glucose; and a third stream comprising water and cellobiose; glucose isomerisation in a second stream to produce fructose; dehydration of fructose to obtain a product containing hydroxymethylfurfural; and recycling the reaction product, wherein recycling includes feeding the reaction product from dehydration to separation; or method includes: hydrolysis of cellulose to obtain a first stream of sugar, containing at least 80 % glucose (weight / dry substance) and water; isomerisation of glucose in a first sugar stream to produce fructose; dehydration of fructose to obtain a reaction product, containing hydroxymethylfurfural, and recycling part of the reaction product from the dehydration step to the separation step, thereby obtaining at least 60 g of hydroxymethylfurfural as product for each 100 g of cellulose, envisaged as source material. Disclosed is a system for converting glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural, wherein system includes: chromatographic separation apparatus, made with possibility of separation of cellulose pulp hydrolyzate flow containing 80 % (weight / dry substance) of cellulose, with ash content less than 6 % containing sodium ions in amount of not more than 5 %, to first flow, a second stream and a third stream; wherein first stream contains water and hydroxymethylfurfural; the second stream contains water and glucose; and the third stream contains water and cellobiose; isomerisation unit configured to carry out isomerisation of glucose into fructose, wherein the isomerisation involves treatment of the second stream with a base to thereby obtain a base treated second stream; dehydration unit, configured to dehydrate fructose into hydroxymethylfurfural, and a flow recirculation means configured to deliver a portion of the product containing hydroxymethylfurfural, into chromatographic separation unit.
EFFECT: novel methods and system which are effective for producing hydroxymethylfurfural from cellulose are disclosed.
