FIELD: chemical industry.

SUBSTANCE: method of producing hydrophobic aluminum oxide involves preparing a suspension containing an aluminum oxide compound having a pH greater than 5.5. Organic composition containing carboxylic acids with hydrocarbon chains having length between 12 and 24 atoms, mixed with obtained suspension to form acid-modified suspension. Method includes hydrothermal conditioning of acid-modified suspension with formation of hydrothermally aged suspension. Hydrothermal conditioning is carried out at temperature of 90 °C to 200 °C for 1–6 hours. Then, hydrothermally-aged suspension is dried. Disclosed also are hydrophobic aluminum oxide and a composition for use in melt compounding.

EFFECT: invention enables to obtain hydrophobic aluminum oxides with a modified surface in the form of nanoparticles with low moisture content, capable of uniformly dispersing in a polymer base.
