FIELD: encoding and decoding film frames and video data.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to output of expanded dynamic range (HDR) content on display devices with different capabilities. Disclosed is a method and an apparatus for adapting video content decoded from elementary streams to characteristics of a display device on at least one type of metadata, providing information on said elementary streams. Such method includes: obtaining (102) additional information (HDR DESCR.), indicating availability of one specific type of metadata; determining whether said video content, decoded from elementary streams, allowing to display on said display device (11), from said additional information (HDR DESCR.) and characteristics (EDID) of display device; and if said video content decoded from elementary streams is defined as being displayable, selecting (105) a sequence of processing operations based on said additional information and characteristics of the display device, and adaptation (106) of video content according to a selected sequence of processing operations.

EFFECT: enabling the decoding device to recognize whether or not metadata will be available during the entire duration of the video program or only during its parts.
