SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for cultivating a genus Haematococcus, specifically Haematococcus pluvialis, for producing astaxanthin. Method of culturing Haematococcus pluvialis for producing astaxanthin involves the steps of providing a substrate, placing Haematococcus pluvialis on the surface of the substrate, exposing Haematococcus pluvialis located on the substrate, high light intensity of at least about 150 mcmol photons m-2s-1 from the beginning of the cultivation process, collecting cultured Haematococcus pluvialis and extracting astaxanthin. High intensity light is at least about 200 mcmol photons m-2s-1, in particular at least 500 mcmole photons m-2s-1. Substrate can be a sheet material, for example a porous sheet of paper, a cellulose ester, in particular, cellulose acetate, mixed cellulose ester, cellulose, cellulose nitrate, polyamides, polyesters and/or polyolefins.

EFFECT: method provides high output of astaxanthin, simplifies the process and reduces costs for producing astaxanthin.
