FIELD: traffic control.

SUBSTANCE: method of adjusting a video camera for high-quality recognition of numberplate in systems for detecting violations of traffic rules consists in the fact that a mechanism for adjusting the operating mode of a camera is used instead of a mechanism for automatic selection of operating parameters which is built into the video camera depending on the shooting conditions. Said program mechanism comprises two camera settings: 1) rough adjustment, when numberplate are not visible in frame or are not detected, and 2) fine tuning when numberplate are seen in frame and detected. Coarse tuning mechanism uses empirically determined values of characteristic frame brightness, optimum for identification of numberplate at different brightness levels of the scene, where the brightness level of the captured scene is determined from the camera settings. Fine adjustment mechanism is used when there are software-found numberplate images in the frame, and corrects the video camera operation mode to achieve optimum characteristic brightness of the background and symbols on the detected numberplate.

EFFECT: higher quality of numberplate detection in systems for fixing violations of traffic rules.
