FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to thermal treatment of steel by hardening using an electric arc and can be used for increasing hardness and wear resistance of parts surfaces, operating at impact and alternate loads in machine building. Method of electric steel hardening of steel items includes heating of product surface by electric arc of direct polarity, ignited between nonconsumable electrode and article surface. For this purpose, non-consumable electrode is used with sharpening angle from 45 to 75±2°. Arc heat input is also controlled by varying current from 40 to 90 A. Article is rotated during processing at rate of 0.009 to 0.02 rpm.
EFFECT: technical result is high hardness and wear resistance of article surface, control of depth of hardened layer.
