FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: claimed process comprises cementing of steel article surface ply with the help of reverse polarity arc discharge plasma between electrode of carbon-containing material and steel article surface to be hardened with electrode displacement along said surface. Surface layer cementation is executed by pulsating arc. For this, electrode of carbon-containing material is oscillated at the rte of 5-20 Hz. Note here that at every electrode oscillation, it is brought to contact with surface being hardened for some 0.02-0.05 s.

EFFECT: proposed process allows hardened surface layer depth of 1-3 mm and HRC 55-60.
