FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to generation of powerful ultra-wideband electromagnetic pulses (EMP) of sub-nanosecond range of durations and can be used in development of corresponding generators. Electromagnetic pulse generator comprises pulsed or pulsed-periodic laser 1, photocathode 2, in which there is hole 3 for laser radiation input, and mesh anode 4 connected to voltage source 5, wherein emission surface of photocathode 2 is made in the form of truncated ellipsoid of revolution. In the first embodiment, the generator comprises a reflecting mirror element 6 located in the first focus of the ellipsoid of rotation with provision for divergence of the laser radiation from the first focus of said ellipsoid of revolution and distribution of initiating action of laser radiation on emission surface of photocathode. In the second embodiment, the generator has X-ray source 7 located in the first focus of the ellipsoid of revolution so as to initiate the X-ray radiation on the emission surface of the photocathode. EMP generator also has parabolic reflector 8 of electromagnetic radiation, the focus of which is aligned with second focus 9 of said ellipsoid of revolution.
EFFECT: technical result is high efficiency when forming broadband directed radiation.
