SUBSTANCE: invention relates to mechanical engineering and can be used in milling the profile of railway wheels. The prefabricated shaped milling cutter contains a housing with landing surfaces for mounting on the machine spindle, tangential cutting plates and support plates located below them. The housing is made in the form of a pentagonal prism with protrusions. The milling cutter is equipped with five segments mounted by means of screws on the corresponding protrusion on the side of the milling cutter housing. Each of the segments is made with sockets for fixing tangential cutting plates in three rows. The cutting edge of each plate follows the shape of the section of the wheel profile. The plates are installed in rows in such a way that the projections of the cutting edges of the cutting plates on the plane, passing through the axis of the milling cutter, overlap each other. The plates mounted on a single segment are arranged to ensure that the complete wheel profile is processed. The cutting plates are formed by two opposing end surfaces and side surfaces, two of which are concave. The dependence for determining the profile of these concave surfaces is given.

EFFECT: processing accuracy and productivity are improved.
