FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in synthesis of sulfuric acid. For synthesis of sulfur trioxide a supply stream, comprising sulfur-containing compounds and dissolved metals and alkali metals is combusted in the presence of an oxygen-enriched stream and auxiliary fuel if needed. Wherein the sulfur-containing compounds in the supply stream are converted into SO2 and the dissolved metals and alkali metals are converted into partially solidified dust. The hot process gas from the combustion furnace is mixed with a colder gas stream in a mixing block so that the temperature of the combined stream is lower than the solidification temperature of the particles. The combined gas stream is cooled in one or two heat exchangers. The solidified dust particles are removed from the combined gas stream in a dust removal device. Hot dilution air is added to the process gas if needed to provide sufficient oxygen to oxidize SO2 to SO3 in an SO2 converter. The process gas is supplied to the SO2 converter, said converter comprising an array of catalyst layers with heat exchangers installed between the catalyst layers, converting SO2 in the process gas to SO3. A system for synthesis of sulfur trioxide is proposed.

EFFECT: invention allows reducing deposit formation in equipment during synthesis of sulfur trioxide.
