FIELD: sulphur production.
SUBSTANCE: invention is related to a process for converting H2S to elemental sulphur in a Claus process unit. Feedstock containing feed gas with 30-100 vol.% of H2S, sulfuric acid, sub-stoichiometric molecular oxygen and, if necessary, fuel is sent to the Claus reaction furnace to produce Claus reaction furnace off-gas. The exhaust gas is cooled and, if necessary, elemental sulphur is removed from the gas. The resulting off-gas is directed to contact with an SO3 barrier material that absorbs and/or converts SO3. The resulting SO3 free gas is sent to contact with a material catalytically active in the Claus reaction. Elemental sulphur is isolated, if necessary, by cooling the effluent from the material catalytically active in the Claus reaction. Moreover, the specified material protecting from SO3 differs from the specified material, which is catalytically active in the Claus reaction.
EFFECT: ensures safe and long-term operation of the installation for the Claus process.
