SUBSTANCE: invention is used for remote determination of the state of snow and ice cover. The essence of the invention lies in the fact that the polarization ratios Prk of the normalized backscattering cross sections and the relative dielectric conductivities εrk of the layers of the snow and ice cover are additionally determined where k = 2, 3, …, n is the number of the layer of the snow and ice cover, the obtained values of the relative dielectric conductivities of the layers with the given values εvrΔ and the state of the snow and ice cover is determined by the condition εrk=εvrΔ: “snow cover”, “firn”, “ice cover” or “water”.
EFFECT: increasing probability of identifying the constituent elements of the structure of the snow and ice cover.
