FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a vacuum arc remelting system for forming an ingot from an electrode. The system is comprised of a crystalliser assembly configured to accommodate an electrode and an ingot, an electromagnetic power source located around the crystalliser assembly, and a lifting mechanism intended to move the electromagnetic power source along the longitudinal axis of the crystalliser assembly. The magnetic field generated by the electromagnetic power source is localised in the arc area during remelting, wherein the electromagnetic power source constitutes a coil containing a magnetic core and several pairs of windings wound on the core, wherein the coil is intended to create a magnetic field from the coil, based on the electric current flowing in said several pairs of windings. Disclosed is a method for vacuum arc remelting for forming an ingot from an electrode, wherein a rotating magnetic field generated by an electromagnetic power source is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the ingot and is localised in the arc area during remelting.

EFFECT: improved ingot surface quality, reduced startup time and increased overall integrity of the base are ensured.
