SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrical engineering and can be used to reduce idling losses of transformers. The method for determining the optimal thickness of the sheets of the magnetic core of a transformer consists in measuring the losses during idling of the magnetic core at two frequencies for two values of the thickness of the sheets and calculating the optimal value of the thickness of the sheets using the formula containing the values of these thicknesses, the values of the measured losses and the ratio of the frequencies.

EFFECT: possibility of reducing magnetic losses in the transformer by optimising the thickness of the sheets of the magnetic core based on the results of four measurements and a calculation by the derived formula.
