SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for detecting the presence and absence of a creature. The method consists in receiving an input signal from the radiation sensor; applying the first low-pass filter to the received input signal with the first time constant and generating the first filter output; applying the second low-pass filter to the received input signal with the second time constant and generating the second filter output; determining the presence of a creature by comparing the cutoff slope of the first filter output with a predefined value; setting the first threshold value based on the second filter output; decreasing the second time constant; increasing the second time constant; calculating the difference between the specified first threshold value and the second filter output; adjusting the specified first threshold value based on the second filter output; and determining the absence when the first filter output falls below the specified first threshold value.
