SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the preparation of a purified composition of human breast milk oligosaccharides (hereinafter – BMO). Breast milk permeate is mixed with lactase under conditions suitable for splitting lactose in breast milk permeate to form a permeate/lactase mixture. Before or simultaneously with the addition of lactase, permeate pH is adjusted to a value of about 3 to about 7.5, and permeate is heated to a temperature of about 20 to about 60°C. The permeate/lactase mixture is incubated for about 5 to about 225 minutes. Lactase is removed from the permeate/lactase mixture by ultrafiltration of permeate/lactase mixture with the formation of an ultrafiltration mixture. The ultrafiltration mixture is nano-filtered for purification and concentration of BMO. The purified composition of BMO is used to positively change microbiota of a human gastrointestinal tract or to influence the formation of anti-inflammatory mediators, while this composition contains from about 0.5% to about 7.5% of BMO and ≤ 5% of lactose. A method for reducing systemic inflammation in a subject in need of this involves injecting an effective amount of a purified composition of BMO to the subject.
EFFECT: group of inventions provides for the preparation of a composition of BMO, which have essentially a reduced content of lactose and minerals.
