FIELD: image processing.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for encoding and decoding images. A data stream representing the encoded image is received by the decoder. A set of rows of consecutive blocks of quantised coefficients of transformed residual values for the encoded image is identified in the data stream. One or more state state variables for entropy decoding of the current block in the current line are initialised. Entropy decoding of the current block is executed based on the state variables for entropy decoding of the current block. When the current block therein is the first block in the current line in the decoding order for decoding the encoded image, and the current line is not the first line in the set of lines in the decoding order, one or several state variables for decoding the current block are initialised based on one or several state variables of the set entropy decoded block. The set entropy decoded block is the second block in the decoding order in the row of consecutive blocks different from the current row.
EFFECT: increased efficiency of image decoding.
