SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the field of creating tunnels or underground roads. A cutting head for a cutting machine intended for creating tunnels or underground roads, with a cylindrical configuration, containing a rotatable body, annular roller knives installed along the circumferential perimeter of the cutting head and provided with a sharp annular cutting edge configured to undercut rock, and cutting units installed on the body of the cutting head, wherein each unit comprises a casing and a shaft. The cutting units comprise cutting units of different types, at least of a first and second types. The cutting unit of the first type has a first rotatable knife containing a first disk blade and a first set of inserts for abrasive processing of rock. The inserts of the first set are installed in a radially peripheral part of the first disk blade and protrude outward from said blade. The cutting unit of the second type has a second rotatable knife containing a second disk blade and a second set of inserts for abrasive processing of rock. The inserts of the second set are installed in a radially peripheral part of the first disk blade and protrude outward from said blade. At least the first and second different types of cutting units differ from each other by at least sets of corresponding inserts. The amount of inserts in the first knife differs from the amount of inserts in the second knife.

EFFECT: creation of a tunnel with a variable cross-sectional area within the maximum and minimum cutting range, creation of a cutting machine operating in the "undercutting" mode, creation of a knife with optimised geometric cutting parameters and optimised geometric parameters for providing a balance between the strength of the knife and a reduction in the wear thereof, are ensured.
