URANIUM-BASED METAL CERAMIC ALLOY Russian patent published in 2021 - IPC G21C3/60 G21C3/64

Abstract RU 2763048 C1

FIELD: nuclear technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to nuclear technology, namely to a uranium-based metal ceramic alloy, and can be used in manufacture of nuclear fuel of fuel elements (FEs) for commercial VVER-type thermal neutron reactors (as a tolerant fuel), as well as for fast neutron reactors and research reactors. The technical result of the invention is achieved by the fact that the uranium-based alloy comprises 2.5 to 12% wt. of molybdenum, main ceramic phases containing oxygen, carbon and nitrogen in an amount of 0.1 to 3.0% wt. with possible alloying of the alloy with additional elements in the form of silicon, tin, chromium, aluminium, forming intermetallic phases, and with alloying of the alloy with elements constituting gamma stabilisers, namely, with niobium, titanium, zirconium. The uranium-based metal ceramic alloy containing molybdenum, in the form of a composite metal ceramic structure of an alloy, consists of a matrix γ-(U-Mo) phase and a ceramic and (or) intermetallic phase or phases. The alloy retains a low thermal neutron capture, has a high liquidus temperature, and is compatible with structural materials, including steel and aluminium shells.

EFFECT: increase in the thermodynamic stability and reaction stability of the uranium-based metal ceramic alloy.
