SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy and can be used for controlling continuous casting. The apparatus comprises one electromagnetic brake coupled with a crystalliser and configured to induce recirculation flows in liquid metal, and a control and command unit configured to control the operation thereof and coupled with the electromagnetic brake and the detection means for collecting the data on each distance from each of the detection means, processing said data depending on the location of said detection means, determining the characteristic parameters of development of the liquid metal surface profile. The control and command unit is configured to process the data on each distance, determining the speed of development of the surface profile, and/or the time-averaged value of each said distance at set time intervals and/or instantaneous deviations from the time-averaged value for each of the detection means as characteristic parameters.

EFFECT: invention provides a possibility of improving the quality of cast products.
