FIELD: electrical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrical engineering. External gap linear arrester (EGLA) for power transmission lines comprises: series varistor unit (1) (SVU), which is made with possibility of connection between power transmission line and grounding; primary spark gap unit (8) in series connected to the first end of the SVU; secondary gap located between the second end of the SVU and ground. Secondary gap is connected in series to the second end of the SVU. Short-circuiting bridge (3) is connected in parallel with the secondary gap. Disconnector (4) is installed in short-circuiting bridge (3), besides, this disconnector is made with the possibility of opening the short-circuiting bridge in case of SVU unit overload. Also described is the pulse protection method implemented by the EGLA discharger.
EFFECT: providing a linear arrester with the ability to withstand lightning pulses and to process switching pulses of a given value without breakdown.
