FIELD: genetic engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for increasing nitrogen fixation in a non-bean plant. The method includes exposure to a plant by a set of non-intergeneric diazotrophic bacteria. Each representative of the set of the specified bacteria carries one or several genetic variations introduced into one or several genes or non-encoding polynucleotides of a genetic regulatory network of nitrogen fixation or assimilation that are not intergeneric diazotrophic bacteria, so that non-intergeneric diazotrophic bacteria become capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen in presence of exogen nitrogen. At the same time, one or several genetic variations include genetic material of an organism having the same taxonomic genus as non-intergeneric diazotrophic bacteria. In this case, the specified one or several genetic variations are a knockout mutation, or change or remove a regulatory sequence of a target gene, or include an insertion of a heterologous regulatory sequence. At the same time, the specified one or several genetic variations lead to an increased activity or expression of nifH or nifA, reduced expression or activity of nifL, or reduced expression or activity of adenylyl transferase or activity of removal of bifunctional glutamine synthetase adenylate. The specified non-intergeneric diazotrophic bacteria in planta produce 1% or more of fixed nitrogen in a plant.
