FIELD: agriculture.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a composition for increasing nitrogen fixation in non-leguminous plants. Composition contains plant seed and non-intergeneric diazotrophic bacteria, including at least one genetic variation introduced into the genetic regulatory network of nitrogen fixation or genetic regulatory network of nitrogen assimilation, leading to one or several of the following: high expression or activity of nifH, high expression or activity of nifA, low expression or activity of nifL, and reduction in the activity of bifunctional glutamine synthetase in removing adenylyl transferase or adenylate. At least one genetic variation therein includes genetic material originating from the same genus as said non-intergeneric diazotrophic bacteria. One or more genetic variations also (A) constitutes a knock-out mutation, (B) a modification or deletion of a regulatory sequence of the target gene, or (C) includes an insertion of a heterologous regulatory sequence.

EFFECT: above bacteria produce 1% or more fixed nitrogen in a plant.
